Photography of Love, 1990
by David Hirsch, critic

Joyce Culver's black and white photographs of lesbian and gay male couples are direct humanistic documents of the motions, the glances and the affectionate moments which emerge in any intimate relationship. They are warm psychological portraits about the long dance of coming together while holding an individual stance. Bob and Jonathan are in bed, while Jewelle and Marty are centered in the panorama from their Lower East Side rooftop. The majority of the couples, though, are photographed against a white backdrop in full light. Sharing and competition, playfulness, give and take, and perhaps above all creating a home base are evident. Each couple is represented by two portraits, side by side. The overall effect is of strength.
